The Hilo gun buyback will give Hawaiʻi Island residents a safe, anonymous way to turn in unwanted firearms on July 18 at the Hilo Police Station.
Hawaiʻi Police Department said the event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the upper parking lot of the Hilo Police Station at 349 Kapiʻolani St.
Participants may surrender handguns, rifles, shotguns, bump stocks and Glock switches. Ammunition will not be accepted. The program is being held in partnership with the Hawaiʻi Department of Law Enforcement, the Hawaiʻi Department of the Attorney General and the Hawaiʻi County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney.
How the Hilo gun buyback works
Police described the buyback as a secure, no-questions-asked option that does not require identification. Law enforcement and public health officials say removing unwanted or unsecured firearms can lower the risk of accidental shootings, theft and suicide.
Those who turn in eligible items can receive gift cards based on what is surrendered: $100 for handguns, rifles, shotguns and Glock switches, and $200 for assault-style rifles and ghost guns. Participants can receive up to three gift cards.
What to bring and eligibility
All firearms must be unloaded and stored inside a container or box in the trunk before arrival. Participants should stay in their vehicles while officers retrieve the items.
Licensed firearms dealers and active or retired law enforcement officers are not eligible to participate.
