Shropshire Astronomical Society observatory plans have cleared a key hurdle, with local planners granting permission for a mini-observatory at Rodington Village Hall near Shrewsbury.
According to the society, members will relocate a disused dome and telescope that previously served the Irish Rangers at the Tern Hill army base near Market Drayton. The group has met at the village hall for 25 years and believes the new equipment will spark wider interest in astronomy.

Telford and Wrekin planning officials described the curved, gloss-white fiberglass dome as unusual but said it would add visual interest to the site. The domed structure is expected to stand just under 2.7 meters, or about 8 feet 9 inches.
In planning documents, society member Stephen Szwajkun said it would be the first public astronomical observatory in the area, intended to inspire residents across Telford and Wrekin and beyond.
Society chair Philip Osman said a permanent observatory will help increase participation and support more community outreach. He added that the dome will be the only observatory in the county with public access, offering a chance to reach a new generation. Osman noted that an agreement to purchase the mini-observatory was reached in May.
Community impact and access
Council officers concluded the proposal would not cause unacceptable noise or disturbance for neighbors. They also said it was unlikely to lead to a significant rise in traffic or parking demand. Planners agreed the facility would serve as a valuable community and educational asset.
The focus on inspiring local residents, particularly young people, echoes recent efforts such as the Ipswich climate change hackathon sparks youth solutions, which also sought to engage the next generation in science.
