Cornell president promises reforms after assault claims

Cornell president promises reforms following allegations of a gang rape that put the Ivy League campus under a national spotlight. President Michael Kotlikoff said Saturday that the university must do better to prevent future harm and to support those affected.

Kotlikoff, addressing the Cornell community, said the administration will move forward with changes aimed at prevention, survivor services and accountability. He emphasized that the school is reviewing policies and resources to close gaps that may have contributed to the incident described by a student identified as Jane.

According to university officials, the planned actions include strengthening prevention training, expanding confidential support, and improving reporting and response processes. Kotlikoff said Cornell will assess how cases are handled across campus systems, and will work more closely with local authorities where appropriate.

He acknowledged widespread concern among students, faculty and alumni, and said leaders are committed to rebuilding trust. The president added that the community must work together to ensure safety and respect for all students.

Kotlikoff said the university will share more details about the reforms in the coming weeks. He also urged anyone with information to come forward through established reporting channels and encouraged students to access counseling and advocacy services.

The allegations have sparked renewed calls for stronger campus safety measures across higher education. For Hawaiʻi students attending mainland universities, the developments serve as a reminder to review safety resources and reporting options on their own campuses.
