Trump calls Russia plague reports concerning, vows review

President Trump said Monday that Russia plague reports are concerning, adding that the United States is examining the situation closely. His comments followed word from the State Department that it is monitoring a suspected pneumonic plague case in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia.

Speaking with reporters before departing the White House, Trump said the administration is “looking at it very strongly” and added, “I hate to see them having it.” He also warned that microbes can become “stronger and smarter” over time, underscoring the need for vigilance.

Russia plague reports under U.S. review

According to the State Department, officials are tracking developments tied to the suspected case of pneumonic plague in Siberia’s Irkutsk region. No additional details on the individual case were provided Monday, and U.S. officials did not announce any changes to travel or health guidance.

Pneumonic plague is a rare but severe respiratory infection caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Health authorities say early detection and antibiotics are key to treatment, and monitoring is standard when suspected cases emerge internationally.

Hawaiʻi health officials were not immediately commenting on any local implications, but the state routinely coordinates with federal partners on emerging global health concerns that could affect travel and the islands’ tourism industry.

The State Department often works closely with overseas posts and public health agencies when suspected outbreaks arise in other countries.

Federal travel or health guidance related to Russia would also draw on expertise from agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which monitors global infectious disease threats.

Trump’s latest comments on an emerging health concern come as he remains a central figure in national politics, following earlier moves such as when Trump shares Cotton’s number, pushes daylight saving time bill in a separate controversy.
