Michael Penix Jr. injury update leads the Atlanta Falcons into Week 6 after the rookie quarterback exited late in a 30-23 overtime loss to the Ravens with a rib issue. Penix absorbed a heavy shot to his right side in the final minute of regulation, then watched overtime from the sideline as trainers examined him.
Penix briefly left for one snap right after the hit, with Tua Tagovailoa stepping in and connecting with Bijan Robinson for 14 yards on second and 20. Penix returned for the next play, threw the ball away under pressure, and Atlanta punted to close regulation.
In overtime, Baltimore opened with a seven-plus-minute touchdown drive. TV cameras showed Falcons medical staff checking Penix’s right ribs multiple times. When Atlanta’s offense finally took the field, Tagovailoa replaced Penix, who sat with a towel over his head. Penix later said he was emotional because he wants to finish games and has been frustrated by past injuries.
“I did take some throws on the sideline just to see how I felt, and I did not feel like I was gonna be able to give our team what we needed to help us win that football game because of the pain that I was feeling,” Penix told reporters, adding that sitting and getting cold made it worse. He added that if Atlanta had received the ball first in overtime, he might have tried to play.
Tagovailoa hit Drake London for 20 yards on Atlanta’s first offensive snap of overtime, then threw an interception to Kyle Hamilton on the next play.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski said additional imaging and testing are planned before setting a timetable, but Penix’s availability to speak after the game was encouraging. Penix sounded confident: “Knowing me, I’mma be ready to go next week because I’ve sat out enough my career. … I will work my tail off to make sure I’m back out there on that field.”
Michael Penix Jr. injury update
Penix’s track record includes significant setbacks:
- 2018 (Indiana Hoosiers): Right torn ACL
- 2019 (Indiana Hoosiers): Fractured collarbone
- 2020 (Indiana Hoosiers): Right torn ACL
- 2021 (Washington Huskies): Left A/C joint separation
- 2025 (Atlanta Falcons): Left knee bone bruise, partially torn ACL
After missing the first two games this season, Penix helped the Falcons rally from 0-2 to 2-2 and keep pace at 2-3. Atlanta has already used four quarterbacks this year: Penix, Tagovailoa, Cooper Rush, and Jack Strand.
Penix’s downfield aggression has opened lanes for the ground game and invigorated the passing attack, particularly with London. The numbers underscore the difference when he plays:
- Yards per play: 6.8 with Penix, 4.4 with others
- Yards per attempt: 9.3 with Penix, 5.6 with others
- TD-INT: 3-1 with Penix, 1-6 with others
- Points per game: 34.3 with Penix, 8 with others
The Falcons host the Chicago Bears in Week 6, and the team would welcome Penix’s return given the stark offensive split.
