Bolton warns Zelensky lecturing Trump could backfire

John Bolton, who served as national security adviser under former President Donald Trump, warned that Zelensky lecturing Trump could backfire, saying it is unlikely to end well for the Ukrainian leader given Trump’s complicated political standing in the United States.

Speaking Thursday on NewsNation’s On Balance, Bolton told host Leland Vittert that public criticism of Trump by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky carries political risks. Bolton suggested the approach could be counterproductive because of Trump’s difficult position domestically.

Bolton characterized the dynamic as fraught, indicating that escalating rhetoric is unlikely to benefit Kyiv in securing continued U.S. support. He argued that engagement strategies that avoid personal confrontations with American political figures may serve Ukraine’s interests more effectively.

Bolton’s remarks come as U.S. policy toward Ukraine remains a central issue in Washington, with debates over aid and military support continuing to shape the political landscape.
