Washington Spirit vs. Gotham FC: Shaw’s status looms large

Washington Spirit vs. Gotham FC takes center stage Saturday with New Jersey/New York pushing for the NWSL Shield and questions swirling around Jaedyn Shaw’s fitness. With three matches left in the regular season, Gotham arrive with elite defensive numbers but an attack that has lagged behind expectations.

Shaw exited U.S. U-23 duty with a minor injury and is listed day-to-day, according to the club. Asked about her availability for the top-of-the-table clash, head coach Juan Carlos Amorós said, “Wait and see.” Her status could define Gotham’s ceiling, given how often she has been the difference-maker in front of goal.

Gotham have allowed the fewest goals in the league and sit second in goal difference, driven largely by their back line. Offensively, they rank 12th in goals scored and have underperformed expected goals. The San Diego Wave, who are chasing Gotham in the table, hold stronger numbers in both goal difference and expected goal differential.

That attacking inefficiency shows up across several key scorers. Ester González had six goals from 7.85 expected before departing the club. Sam Kerr has four from 9.58 xG, Rose Lavelle four from 6.26 xG, and Jordynn Dudley four from 5.76 xG. Shaw has been the outlier, capable of creating and finishing from nearly anywhere, whether cutting in from the wing, heading chances, or striking from distance. With so many attacking stars on the roster, opponents cannot simply key on Shaw without opening space for others.

How to watch Washington Spirit vs. Gotham FC, odds

Date: Saturday, Oct. 17 | Time: 12:30 p.m. ET
Location: Audi Field, Washington, D.C.
TV: CBS
Odds: Washington Spirit +160; Draw +230; NJ/NY Gotham +155

U.S. women’s national team coach Emma Hayes recently opted to keep Shaw with the U-23s to ensure regular minutes rather than bring her off the bench with the senior team, citing depth on the wings. That decision underscores how vital consistent playing time is for Shaw’s form, and Gotham’s attack may depend on it as the postseason approaches.

Even with the offensive wobble, Gotham’s defensive structure makes them a strong title contender. They may no longer resemble the star-studded super team they once envisioned, but they remain well-balanced with multiple paths to goal. If opponents manage to limit Shaw’s looks, though, it raises fair questions about where the decisive goals will come from.

Third-place Washington provides a timely barometer. The Spirit should test Gotham’s back line more than their attack, but any route to the championship likely runs through Washington, and the NWSL final is set for Audi Field. All of that makes Saturday’s matchup a valuable dress rehearsal and must-watch viewing.
