Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells have become the centerpiece of my at-home workouts, replacing an entire rack of 15 traditional pairs and making it easier to skip the trip to the gym.

Why do I love these so much?
As a certified personal trainer with specialties in orthopedic exercise and senior fitness, I can vouch for the wide-ranging benefits of strength work, from lowering injury risk and supporting bone density to promoting long-term health.
Barriers to getting started are real. These adjustable weights help remove many of them. They consolidate a 5 to 52.5 pound range into one compact pair measuring about 17 by 8 inches, which saves space in small homes and condos common across Hawaiʻi.
They are a one-time purchase that can be more economical than a monthly gym bill, and switching loads is simple with the built-in dials. That makes it easier to push toward hypertrophy without losing momentum, or to quickly de-load as form starts to falter to reduce injury risk.
The included grooved trays keep the bells stable when racking, which helps protect floors and toes.
The stabilized, hex-style discs support plank-based moves like renegade rows and weighted push-ups, something many rounded dumbbells do not. The grip strikes a useful balance too.
It is textured enough to stay secure when hands get sweaty, but not so abrasive that it accelerates calluses, which helps maintain form through longer sets.
If you decide to buy, choose a new pair.
Earlier versions were subject to recalls because plates could detach from the handle. My older set has held up for years, though I expect it will need replacing eventually.
The latest model adds a redesigned safety mechanism that positions the metal locking disc directly on the handle for a more secure hold on each weight plate. With that improvement, I feel confident recommending the current version both as a fitness professional and gear tester.
