Ilhan Omar HSI raid: Husband speaks as probes widen

Ilhan Omar HSI raid developments continued to draw attention in Washington, D.C., this week, with the Minnesota Democrat remaining out of public view while her husband, political consultant Tim Mynett, was seen near their shared rental home.

Mynett was spotted Wednesday walking the couple’s dog and later taking out trash, according to witnesses in the neighborhood. Asked on an evening walk about online rumors that Rep. Omar had left the country, Mynett declined to address the claim and complained about media presence bothering nearby residents. A congressional staffer was also seen arriving at the home with food that day as security stood by outside.

What we know about the Ilhan Omar HSI raid

Federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations searched the residence Monday as part of a criminal fraud probe into Omar’s immigration paperwork, according to officials familiar with the matter. Her cellphone and passport were reportedly seized during the operation.

Separately, reporters have noted that Omar’s office helped update her listed birth year in the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library from 1981 to 1982. Omar became a U.S. citizen through her father’s naturalization when she was a minor, according to those reports. If she were born in 1981, she would have been 18 at the time, which could raise questions about the citizenship process. The revised birthdate remained publicly listed during her tenure in the Minnesota House and for several months after she entered Congress.

When approached earlier this week about the federal review of Omar’s immigration history, Mynett said he had “no concerns,” adding that his wife arrived in the United States at age 12 as a child war refugee.

Relatives subpoenaed, political criticism rises

As part of the HSI inquiry, at least two of Omar’s relatives, including her sister Sahra Noor, were reportedly served subpoenas. The heightened scrutiny prompted fresh political attacks, including a lengthy social media post from former President Donald Trump questioning Omar’s previously reported net worth and the couple’s assets.

Financial disclosures examined in a separate review

Following the Ilhan Omar HSI raid, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said her office is also looking into Omar’s financial disclosures, an inquiry that officials stressed is unrelated to the immigration probe and home search. The review follows Omar’s 2024 congressional filing that initially listed business interests connected to Mynett valued between $6 million and $30 million. Her office later said the figures were incorrect and amended the documents.

The most significant revisions involved Mynett’s reported stakes in a winery and a venture capital advisory firm. In the original filing, his equity in the winery was listed between $1 million and $5 million, and his stake in the advisory firm between $5 million and $25 million. The amended filing now lists both interests with no value. Omar’s office has said Mynett has business partners and that the earlier figures mistakenly reflected total company equity rather than his personal share, and that liabilities were not initially accounted for.

Authorities emphasized that the financial disclosure review is proceeding separately from the HSI-led immigration inquiry.
