Honolulu officials are consolidating emergency shelters Oahu from seven public school sites to three city parks so campuses can reopen for students.
Emergency shelters Oahu moved to three parks
Beginning at 6 p.m., the city will open Tropical Storm Lala shelters at Booth District Park in Pauoa, Ewa Mahiko District Park, and Kaneohe District Park.
The seven school shelters set to close are Blanche Pope Elementary, Castle High, Kahuku Elementary, Kapolei High, Moanalua High, Nanakuli Elementary, and Roosevelt High. Officials said the Mililani High shelter closed earlier at 3 p.m. today.
According to the city, peak operations over the weekend saw up to 247 people using the “hurricane refuge areas.” Several dozen are expected to transition to the new city park locations, which are pet friendly. Those heading to the parks should bring food, water, medications, and other essentials, along with supplies for their pets.
“We are grateful to our state counterparts for providing these hurricane-resistant school facilities to our communities in their time of need,” Mayor Rick Blangiardi said in a news release.
The shelters are being opened in response to Tropical Storm Lala, which has prompted preparations across the island. For official updates on park shelter locations and hours, residents can check the City and County of Honolulu website.
