The high surf advisory has been extended for south-facing shores across Hawaii, with forecasters warning of continued hazardous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, the high surf advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. July 26. Surf of 7 to 10 feet is producing large breaking waves and strong rip currents that will make swimming and other ocean recreation dangerous along south shores.
Officials urge the public to follow guidance from lifeguards and ocean safety crews. When in doubt, do not go out.
High surf advisory continues into the weekend
Meteorologists said the south-southwest swell that prompted the high surf advisory late this week is slowly easing. However, an overlapping pulse from the same direction is expected to push south shore surf back to advisory levels by midday Saturday and through at least Saturday night, possibly into Sunday.
Beachgoers should use extra caution near harbor entrances and on wet, unstable rocks and jetties, and consider visiting lifeguarded beaches on more sheltered coasts until the swell subsides.
