Hurricane Fausto has entered the Central Pacific and is about 1,950 miles east of Hilo, according to forecasters. Hurricane Fausto is moving west at roughly 13 mph with maximum sustained winds near 80 mph.
The National Weather Service and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said this westward motion is expected to persist for the next few days. Hurricane-force winds extend up to 45 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds reach out as far as 185 miles.
Forecasters noted that small changes in strength are possible on Thursday, with a gradual weakening trend likely over the weekend. It remains too early to determine if or when the Big Island might see any direct effects from the system.
A high surf advisory is currently in effect for parts of Hawaiʻi Island. The National Weather Service said that advisory is unrelated to Hurricane Fausto and is instead linked to a separate low-pressure system that formed near New Zealand.
Officials said they will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as Hurricane Fausto progresses across the basin.
