The Hawaii Island high surf advisory is in effect for south-facing shores after the National Weather Service downgraded an earlier warning, with the advisory set to continue until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
County officials said West Hawai‘i’s Kahalu‘u Beach Park, Kohanaiki Beach Park and the pavilions at Old Kona Airport Beach Park remain closed while crews remove debris pushed ashore by weekend King Tides.
Forecasters reported surf peaked near 14 feet Tuesday morning and is expected to gradually diminish through tonight. During the afternoon peak high tide, wave run-up is possible. The Weather Service cautioned that the combination of elevated surf and high water levels could lead to nuisance coastal flooding.

Beachgoers should use caution around harbor entrances, reefs and coastal roadways. Minor overwash and debris on beaches and walkways are possible during high tide, according to the National Weather Service.
