Anne Carson wins the Nobel Prize in Literature, with the Swedish Academy in Stockholm honoring the Canadian poet and essayist for work that weaves classical influences with contemporary forms.
The announcement came Thursday in Stockholm, with officials recognizing Carson’s distinct voice and her fusion of ancient texts and modern sensibilities across poetry and essays. Further updates are expected following the Academy’s full citation and the laureate’s response.
Nobel Prize in Literature announcement
Last year, Hungarian novelist László Krasznahorkai received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Judges said his surreal, anarchic works, which mix a bleak worldview with mordant humor, affirm the force of art amid what they called “apocalyptic terror.”
Other Nobel awards this week
Earlier in the week, the Nobel in physiology or medicine went to three researchers whose discoveries led to a light-driven tool that helps map brain function. The physics award recognized a scientist for clarifying a rare class of neutrinos, and the chemistry prize honored two researchers for explaining mirror-image molecules, a breakthrough that has enabled the development of numerous medications.
The week concludes Friday with the peace prize, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences will be announced Monday.
The prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor, or about 1.2 million U.S. dollars. The amount is the same whether it is awarded to an individual, a small team, or an organization.
