Bend Oregon school shooting: hero identified, teacher named

The Bend Oregon school shooting that left three children and a teacher dead at Silver Rail Elementary saw a bystander step in to stop the gunman, according to authorities. A law enforcement source identified the man as 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco.

At a Friday news conference, police named the teacher killed as 25-year-old Meghan Lambert and said the youngest of the victims was 5-year-old Rhoam Summer. Officials also said the other two students killed were 8 and 11 years old.

In a statement read by authorities, Lambert’s family described her as compassionate with a big heart who advocated for the underdog and people with special needs. They said she was a devoted sister, daughter, niece and granddaughter, and that friends became her family.

Earlier Friday, Giamanco’s mother, Kenda Freeman, said her son intervened and shot the attacker who had opened fire at the school, according to the Associated Press. Giamanco’s brother told NBC News that he is a local carpenter and father whose two daughters attend Silver Rail. The family said he is shaken and does not wish to speak publicly.

Lambert’s family also thanked the bystander, saying they know he is going through a difficult time and calling him a hero for putting himself at risk for others. They offered prayers for the other families, adding that Lambert loved the children and that they would show those families love in her honor.
