Bill Belichick Giants reunion took place Saturday night as members of the 1986 New York Giants gathered in New Jersey to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the franchise’s first Super Bowl title. Belichick arrived shortly after North Carolina’s loss to Notre Dame.
Belichick posed for a photo with former Giants stars Lawrence Taylor and Leonard Marshall during the dinner, then departed. He was not part of the halftime ceremony on Sunday that honored the 1986 team.
Bill Belichick Giants reunion highlights his Giants legacy
In his second season as North Carolina’s head coach, Belichick first rose to prominence in New York as the Giants’ defensive coordinator from 1985 to 1990. During that six-year run, the Giants captured the organization’s first two Super Bowls behind dominant defensive play.
Belichick was famously carried off the field after New York shut out Washington in the 1986 NFC Championship. In Super Bowl XXI, the Giants produced a pivotal goal-line stand on the way to a 39-20 win over John Elway’s Broncos.
Four years later, Belichick’s defense held the high-powered 49ers to 13 points in the 1990 NFC title game, halting San Francisco’s bid for three straight championships. In Super Bowl XXV, his game plan limited the Bills to 19 points despite Thurman Thomas rushing for 135 yards, while the Giants’ offense controlled the ball for a Super Bowl-record 40 minutes and 33 seconds.
New York edged Buffalo 20-19, still the only Super Bowl decided by one point.
Parcells absent, but the ’86 roster turns out
Belichick later teamed with Bill Parcells in New York before leading the Patriots to an NFL-record six Super Bowl titles as a head coach. Parcells, who in 1996 became the second coach to guide multiple franchises to Super Bowl appearances, was not feeling well and did not attend the weekend festivities.
He recently discussed the ’86 team in an interview, praising quarterback Phil Simms, who earned Super Bowl MVP after completing 88 percent of his passes against Denver.
Many other members of the championship squad attended the celebration. The 1986 Giants ended a 30-year title drought, finishing 17-2 with the league’s second-best scoring defense and eighth-best scoring offense.
In the postseason, they outscored San Francisco, Washington and Denver by a combined 105-23.
Belichick’s current chapter at North Carolina
Belichick’s appearance is notable given his limited ties to the NFL since parting with the Patriots after the 2023 season. He spent a year in the media before taking the North Carolina job.
The Tar Heels went 4-8 in his first season in Chapel Hill, and they have split their first four games of the 2026 campaign. For more on the betting side of the league, see our breakdown of Week 4 NFL odds: Model picks after 10,000 simulations.
