Cassidy Hutchinson grand jury reviews possible false statements

A federal panel in Washington, D.C., is weighing evidence in the Cassidy Hutchinson grand jury review of possible false statements to the congressional committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Additional material could be presented to jurors as early as next week, the source said. The inquiry remains in the grand jury stage, and officials have not decided whether to bring criminal charges.

Hutchinson, who served as a top aide to then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, became a key witness for the House select committee that examined the Capitol riot and former President Donald Trump’s efforts to contest the 2020 election results.

In a widely watched June 2022 hearing, she testified about Trump’s conduct on Jan. 6, recounting what she said she was told by another White House official after the president was informed he could not go to the Capitol. That description of an alleged confrontation inside the presidential vehicle was later disputed by others said to be familiar with the episode.

Cassidy Hutchinson grand jury focus remains unclear

It is not yet known which portions of Hutchinson’s congressional testimony are under scrutiny. A report published Thursday said the Justice Department is examining whether she made false statements to Congress and that a federal grand jury was convened to take evidence.

Grand jury presentations are investigative and do not by themselves indicate that a crime occurred or that charges will follow.

Representatives for the Justice Department and Hutchinson’s attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The House select committee that examined the Capitol riot and former President Donald Trump’s efforts to contest the 2020 election results has been a focal point of broader fights over the 2020 race, including DNC sues Trump over $20M in taxpayer-funded midterm ads and other legal and political battles.
