CFP media rights talks with ESPN continue amid 24-team bid

IRVING, Texas — CFP media rights discussions are still underway with ESPN following the close of an exclusive negotiating period, as officials evaluate a proposal to expand the College Football Playoff field from 12 to 24 teams.

According to the CFP, talks with the network have been constructive and will continue beyond the initial 30-day window. ESPN’s new agreement, which begins this year, is valued at $7.8 billion over six seasons and gives the network the first option to carry the initial two games tied to any playoff expansion.

“The dialogue throughout the window has been constructive, and we will carry these conversations forward with ESPN as we determine the path ahead,” the CFP said in a statement, adding that discussions are confidential and updates will be provided when appropriate.

CFP media rights tied to potential 24-team format

Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti said Thursday he was optimistic expansion to 24 teams could be finalized during ESPN’s exclusive window, while also suggesting the deadline would be extended.

A central hurdle to doubling the field from 12 to 24 teams is offsetting revenue that could be lost if conference championship games are removed to create space for additional playoff rounds. Officials are weighing whether ESPN, alone or alongside other media partners, can assemble a financial plan that works within the remaining timeline.

The playoff expanded from four to 12 teams in 2024. After conference leaders were unable to agree on further changes, the CFP retained the same model for this season, according to the College Football Playoff.
