ChatGPT Work outages and Microsoft Outlook issues hit users

ChatGPT Work outages and separate Microsoft email problems disrupted users Monday, as both OpenAI and Microsoft acknowledged issues and said they were working on fixes.

OpenAI reported elevated errors and latency impacting ChatGPT Work for roughly three hours, according to its status page. The company said users across multiple subscription plans might be unable to start or continue tasks and that engineers were implementing a mitigation.

Microsoft said it was investigating degraded functionality within Exchange Online, which supports Outlook services. The company’s Microsoft 365 status account said it was reviewing service telemetry and diagnostics to isolate the source of the problem.

Reports tracked by Downdetector showed more than 1,100 users flagging issues with OpenAI services as of 2:24 p.m. ET Monday. Reports tied to Microsoft Outlook climbed to around 4,600 shortly after, with both tallies peaking earlier in the day.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT account posted that “ChatGPT Work isn’t working right now,” adding an apology and that a fix was in progress.

ChatGPT Work outages amid broader AI competition

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work in July as an enterprise agent positioned to help teams handle more complex projects, including creating slides, web apps, spreadsheets and documents. The service directly competes with Anthropic’s Claude Cowork.

Microsoft began its partnership with OpenAI in 2019 with a $1 billion investment that eventually expanded to about $13 billion. While the companies remain closely linked, they have increasingly competed in multiple areas of AI products and services.

Microsoft said it has confirmed degraded functionality across various Exchange Online features and continues to investigate. OpenAI said it is working to restore normal operation for ChatGPT Work outages.
