Cornwall fly-tipping crackdown brings fines up to £5,000

Cornwall fly-tipping crackdown efforts are intensifying, with authorities warning that offenders now face fines of up to £5,000 as part of a tougher approach to illegal dumping.

“We work hard to identify those responsible for illegal dumping and will hold offenders to account wherever possible,” said Sarah-Jane Brown, group leader for community protection at Cornwall Council. She urged residents to report suspicious activity and share details that could help trace those who dump rubbish.

Councillor Thalia Marrington, the cabinet member for community safety and public protection, highlighted the toll of fly-tipping on people and the environment. “Fly-tipping can cause serious harm to our communities, the environment and wildlife. It also costs councils and landowners huge amounts of money to clear up,” she said.

The council is encouraging the public to dispose of waste responsibly and to use licensed carriers, noting that information from residents is often critical to enforcement actions.

Officials said the increased penalties are intended to deter offenders and reduce the burden on taxpayers and landowners who often shoulder cleanup costs. The initiative also emphasizes education on proper waste disposal, along with targeted investigations to identify repeat offenders.

Residents are asked to report fly-tipping incidents through official council channels, such as the Cornwall Council website, providing details such as vehicle descriptions, locations and dates when safe to do so.
