Falcons vs. Saints: 3 key takeaways from 45-24 rout

Superdome (New Orleans) — The Falcons vs. Saints showdown ended with Atlanta rolling 45-24, pulling the Falcons back to 2-2 and leaving New Orleans searching for answers after another slow start.

Atlanta has now won back-to-back primetime games with Michael Penix Jr. under center, inserting itself into the early NFC South race.

Here are three takeaways from Monday night.

Falcons vs. Saints: Atlanta finds separation on the road

In the previous six seasons, Atlanta did not notch a single road win by 20 or more points. It now has two in 11 days, following a 34-10 victory at Green Bay and Monday’s convincing win in New Orleans.

The surge aligns with a healthy Michael Penix Jr. While Bijan Robinson remains the offense’s focal point, Penix has punished defenses keyed on the run. He went 18 of 25 for 256 yards at Lambeau, then 15 of 20 for 223 yards and a touchdown at the Superdome.

His 127.7 passer rating marked a career best as Atlanta posted its highest point total in a decade. Credit also goes to new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, entrusted with play-calling and maximizing balance.

Bijan Robinson shared the workload with Brian Robinson, who added three touchdowns to keep fresh legs late. Atlanta’s next three are at home but come against the Ravens, Bears and 49ers, who are a combined 10-2.

Even one win in that stretch would be valuable as the Falcons look to keep pace in a tight NFC South. For more on this week’s NFL slate, see Week 4 NFL odds: Model picks after 10,000 simulations.

Saints’ chronic slow starts prove costly

Despite ranking top 10 in scoring and total offense even without injured first-round receiver Jordyn Tyson, New Orleans is 1-3 due to early deficits that keep piling up.

Through four games, the Saints have trailed big in three: down 21-0 to the Lions in a one-point loss, 14-3 to the Ravens in their lone win, 13-6 to the Raiders in another close defeat, and 24-7 at halftime on Monday.

Missing running back Travis Etienne hurt against Atlanta, and he is expected to miss at least three more games with a hamstring injury. The difference on the ground was stark, with Atlanta holding a 138-15 first-half rushing edge.

Last season’s late rebound was fueled by defense, which allowed 17.5 points per game over the final eight contests. This year, New Orleans surrendered 27 per game in its first three, and Monday only worsened the average.

The Saints rank bottom 10 against the run and on third down, forcing the offense to chase games with second-half passing volume that can inflate their numbers. Fans can track official team updates on the New Orleans Saints website.

Pass rush is Atlanta’s missing piece

Preseason concerns about the Falcons’ pass rush have largely materialized after losing Jalon Walker to a season-ending injury and James Pearce to an eight-game suspension. A unit that finished second in the league with 57 sacks last season has only seven through four games, pacing for barely half of last year’s total.

Za’Darius Smith, who came out of retirement to help, had 2.5 sacks entering Monday but exited with a concussion, leaving his status unclear. With three straight home games against top competition ahead, Atlanta needs more consistent backfield disruption, even against potential backup quarterbacks.

Pearce’s return later this season could help, but the thin pass rush has contributed to just two takeaways in four games, tied for the league low. Fans can find broader league context on the official NFL site as Atlanta works on shoring up that front as the next step if it wants to be more than a strong offensive team.
