Trump New Mexico name change pitch revives ‘New America’ idea

Trump New Mexico name change resurfaced this week as former President Donald Trump again urged the state to adopt “New America,” claiming the rebrand would lift home values, incomes and state pride.

“New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He added that the new name would bring “value and prestige,” asserting residents would feel even prouder “while saluting our beautiful American Flag.”

Trump also took aim at the state’s elections, writing, “Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!” He did not provide evidence for the allegation or explain how a name change would affect property values or wages.

The appeal revives a pitch Trump circulated last month, when he shared a map with “Mexico” crossed out and replaced by “America.” The White House amplified that post on its official X account at the time.

He later repeated the idea during remarks at the RNC Midterm Convention on Sept. 9, saying, “We think it should be called New America,” and claiming the concept was popular.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, pushed back then, saying the state’s name “isn’t up for debate — it’s been ours since before the United States existed.” She argued the administration was distracted while her team focused on child care, education, health care and housing.

“While the White House wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo México is busy doing the work,” she said.

Constitutional hurdle and broader renaming drive

Trump’s latest post calls for a change but does not outline a process. New Mexico’s name is set in Article I of the state constitution, which states, “The name of this state is New Mexico.”

The push follows Trump’s federal move to label Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” and his floated idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”
