A Big Island wind advisory will be in effect from noon today through 6 p.m. Sunday for north, south and southeast portions of Hawaiʻi Island, as strong trade winds enhanced by terrain are expected while Tropical Storm Moke tracks south of the state, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
The strongest winds are expected tonight and through Sunday night over and downslope of leeward sections, including mountain ridges, gaps and areas where winds accelerate downslope from higher terrain.
Forecasters are calling for east to northeast winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph in affected areas.
Gusts may approach high wind warning thresholds of 58 mph or higher in typically windy locations such as leeward Kohala and near South Point. South Point was among the areas that saw significant impacts a week ago from Hurricane Lala.
Winds at these speeds can damage shingles, break tree branches, dislodge tents and awnings, and make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
