The Hulu Street Evacuation Drill returns to Waikoloa Village on Saturday, giving residents and visitors a chance to practice their emergency route. The Hulu Street Evacuation Drill, also known as Hulu Holoholo, will run from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, according to County of Hawaiʻi Civil Defense.
“Practicing your evacuation routes is an important part of any emergency plan, and we encourage residents to join us for this semi-annual drill,” Mayor Kimo Alameda said. “By knowing where to go, we can all be more prepared when a disaster occurs.”
Hulu Street Evacuation Drill route details
Participants can drive the evacuation route from Hulu Street to Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway. Upon exiting the road, motorists will be directed to turn north, or right, onto Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway. Drivers who need to head south will be instructed to turn in at Puakō to change direction.
The emergency route is suitable for low-clearance vehicles, including standard passenger cars. Although there are gravel turnouts for emergencies, officials advise motorists to stay on the main road surface while crossing the fire-prone area.
Second route project underway
Work is in progress on a separate evacuation link connecting Kamakoa Drive and Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway. The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is funding construction, and the County of Hawaiʻi will maintain the route once it is completed.
