The Hawaii primary election concludes today, and in-person turnout has been light so far. Voters who still have their ballots must use a drop box or vote in person by 7 p.m. for their ballots to count in the Hawaii primary election.
The mostly mail-in primary began July 21 when ballots were delivered to voters. Election officials caution it is too late to mail ballots today, since they must be received by 7 p.m. to be counted. Ballots can be deposited in official drop boxes until the 7 p.m. deadline, and the state’s full list of locations is available at elections.hawaii.gov.
Voters may also cast ballots in person today, and anyone in line at 7 p.m. at a county voting location will be allowed to vote. According to Honolulu Election Administrator Rex Quidilla, only 113 voters had checked in to vote in person at Honolulu Hale and Kapolei Hale as of 9 a.m. Quidilla said he did not expect the absence of lines in the morning, but encouraged voters that in-person voting was moving quickly.
By midmorning, people were arriving steadily but without lines at Honolulu Hale. Others were using drive-up options to deposit completed ballots. Officials reiterated that ballots must be in a drop box by 7 p.m. to be counted.
Initial results will be released shortly after the last voter in line at 7 p.m. has cast a ballot and all locations close. The first report, expected to include the bulk of ballots received before today, will be followed by a second tally after 10 p.m., and a third tally on Sunday.

Election results will be posted by the state after release. Voters can continue to drop off ballots or vote in person until the 7 p.m. deadline today, and the choices in the governor’s race include candidates such as Ken Fujiyama.
