Vibrant Hawaiʻi and KōCreate have released two Puna and Kaʻu energy reports that compile community perspectives on costs, reliability, preparedness, and future renewable projects in the districts.
The reports draw on input from 481 residents, including 340 in Puna and 141 in Kaʻū. Topics include energy affordability, frequency and impact of power outages, household preparedness, renewable energy development, community participation in planning, protection of ʻāina and cultural resources, and the benefits residents expect from future energy investments.
Across both districts, respondents voiced a strong preference for energy systems that are affordable, dependable, resilient, and protective of land, food, water, and overall community well-being. Participants also stressed the need for early and meaningful community involvement, transparent decision-making, keeping benefits local, and accessible education about available energy choices.
According to the organizations, the Puna and Kaʻu energy reports are intended to guide government agencies, utilities, developers, community groups, and media seeking to understand how energy policies and infrastructure decisions affect households and neighborhoods. Vibrant Hawaiʻi and KōCreate plan to use the findings to support ongoing community education and engagement.
Puna and Kaʻu energy reports outline next steps
Planned educational efforts include workshops on:
- How to read and understand a utility bill.
- Comparing rooftop solar, battery storage, off-grid, and community energy options.
- Identifying available financial assistance and incentives.
- Strengthening household preparedness and mitigation for power outages and other disruptions.
The nonprofits also intend to continue sharing results with decisionmakers and to identify opportunities for Puna and Kaʻū residents to join upcoming planning efforts, policy discussions, and community benefits agreement processes.
