The Tarik Skubal trade became official early Sunday, sending Detroit’s ace to the Los Angeles Dodgers and leaving the left-hander emotional about departing the team that drafted and developed him.
Skubal said the move felt less like a fresh start and more like leaving unfinished business in Detroit, where he hoped to help deliver the franchise’s first World Series title since 1984. “It’s crazy. Going into this season, this isn’t what I planned on doing. But circumstances change, situations change,” he said, adding that his goal had been to win a championship for the city and organization that believed in him.
The Tigers had been bounced in five games in the American League Division Series in each of the past two seasons. Skubal, who took the loss in the decisive Game 5 in 2024, said those setbacks fueled him. He used the following offseason to push harder, only to see Detroit fall in another fifth game the next year, deepening his resolve to elevate his performance.

Now 29, Skubal rose from an under-the-radar recruit out of Kingman, Arizona, where Seattle University was his only Division I offer, to a ninth-round Tigers pick in 2018. He debuted during the shortened 2020 season and became a rotation mainstay the next year.
After flexor tendon surgery sidelined him late in 2022 and early in 2023, he emerged as the American League’s dominant starter, posting ERAs under 2.80 in each of the past four seasons and winning the last two AL Cy Young Awards.
In Los Angeles, Skubal will join a marquee staff that includes two-time National League Cy Young winner Blake Snell, expected to return following a rehab assignment, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, a leading award contender this season. “I’m excited to be a Dodger,” Skubal said. “I’m excited to get down there and meet all those guys and chase three championships in a row.”
Detroit’s return and Skubal’s contract outlook
Skubal is set to become a free agent after this season, and it was unlikely Detroit would match the significant cost to retain him. In the Tarik Skubal trade, the Tigers received right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith, along with outfield prospect Zyhir Hope from Los Angeles.
Skubal departs Detroit with a 61-42 regular-season record over 153 games, including 150 starts, a 3.04 ERA, and 1,005 strikeouts in 863 1/3 innings. He is 7-5 with a 2.79 ERA this year, with Detroit scoring only five total runs in his five losses. In the postseason, he is 2-1 with a 2.04 ERA across six starts.

Skubal voiced deep appreciation for the Tigers, thanking the organization for drafting him in 2018, providing resources and support, and sticking with him through early struggles.
He said parting with his teammates would be the hardest part. “I love all those guys in there. They’re some of my best friends,” he said.
