Waianae assault arrest was made late Friday after Honolulu police say a 34-year-old man allegedly attacked and choked a 73-year-old in the Leeward Oahu community.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. in Wai‘anae. Officers responded and located the suspect at the scene. He was taken into custody on suspicion of second-degree assault of an elder, defined in state law as a victim 60 or older, and felony abuse strangulation.
Police noted that in legal terms, strangulation involves external pressure that obstructs a person’s airway. A conviction does not require death or visible injury.
HPD said the suspect was booked at about 11:20 p.m. and remained in custody Saturday as the investigation continued.

Detectives are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault in Wai‘anae. No additional details on the condition of the 73-year-old man were released.
