Tropical Storm Amanda has strengthened into the first named system of the 2026 Eastern Pacific hurricane season, according to the National Hurricane Center.

As of 8 a.m. HST Wednesday, June 3, the center of Tropical Storm Amanda was located about 1,475 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. The storm was moving northwest near 8 mph, and that general motion is expected to continue through Friday, forecasters said.

The National Hurricane Center reported that a turn toward the west and west-southwest with slower forward speed is expected this weekend. Maximum sustained winds were near 40 mph with higher gusts, and additional strengthening is anticipated over the next couple of days. Forecasters expect a weakening trend later this weekend. Tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 60 miles from the center, and the estimated minimum central pressure is 29.71 inches.

Forecasters noted the system could transition to a post-tropical remnant low around Day 5, and some models indicate that change could occur sooner.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center is responsible for cyclones between 140°W longitude and the International Date Line. Tropical Storm Amanda remains in the Eastern Pacific at 10.6°N, 128.2°W.

The Pacific hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, though tropical cyclones can form at any time. NOAA’s outlook for the 2026 central Pacific hurricane season calls for a 70 percent chance of above-normal activity, with an estimated 5 to 13 tropical cyclones in the central Pacific.
