The Community Resilience Fair is coming to North Kohala on Aug. 29 at Hisaoka Gym in Kamehameha Park, offering free, family-friendly activities and vital preparedness information.
Presented by Hawaiian Electric with Hawai‘i County Council member James Hustace, Hawai‘i County Civil Defense and the Kohala Resilience Hub, the Community Resilience Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event features an open house and community meeting centered on wildfire safety and preparedness, plus keiki activities and food vendors.
County agencies, businesses and community organizations will be on hand to share resources on preparing for emergencies and keeping homes and neighborhoods safe, according to organizers.
Community Resilience Fair meeting and wildfire safety
A community meeting is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. It will open with a presentation outlining Hawaiian Electric’s wildfire safety strategy for reducing risk and protecting high-risk areas. Planned measures include enhanced safety procedures, expanded video monitoring, added weather stations and the utility’s Public Safety Power Shutoff Program.
Following the presentation, a moderated panel will discuss wildfire safety, emergency preparedness and ways communities can collaborate to support one another.
“Kohala is considered a wildfire risk area, and our residents are understandably concerned,” Hustace said in a release about the event. “The Community Resilience Fair brings everyone together to share information and resources and, more importantly, find ways to collaborate and support each other. We are stronger together.”
