Rainbow Wahine exhibition set at UH Hilo on Aug. 15

The Rainbow Wahine exhibition will give fans their first look at the Hawaii women’s volleyball team under new head coach Joshua Walker, with a matchup against UH Hilo set for Aug. 15 at 2 p.m. at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

UH Hilo announced the event on Monday. Hawaii has released its full regular-season schedule, but has not yet issued an official notice about the exhibition.

Rainbow Wahine exhibition details

Second-year Vulcans head coach Reed Sunahara said in a release that facing a Division I opponent is a valuable connection for Hilo, noting the programs last met decades ago. He praised the island’s volleyball community and pointed to the energy around the Rainbow Warrior men as a model Hilo hopes to emulate.

Tickets are priced at $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and middle school and high school students, and $5 for children 12 and under.

Series history and recent form

Hawaii holds a 24-0 record against the Vulcans. The schools’ most recent official meeting was in 1990 on Oahu.

The Rainbow Wahine are coming off the first losing season in program history, finishing 12-17 and missing the six-team Big West Tournament. UH now competes in the Mountain West Conference.

UH Hilo finished 20-9 last season, tying for third place in the Pacific West Conference.
