HONOLULU — A 27-year-old Uber driver is fighting for his life after he was robbed at gunpoint, beaten by multiple men and stabbed in the abdomen after dropping off a passenger at Kalihi Valley Homes, according to authorities.
The attack unfolded in front of one of the structures at the sprawling complex after the driver completed a late-night ride and let a passenger out of his vehicle. Investigators believe the man was then singled out and surrounded by a group of approximately seven attackers for no known reason.
The assailants allegedly pointed a gun at the driver and demanded money and other belongings. When they apparently believed he was not producing the money quickly enough, the encounter turned violent.
Police said the group punched and kicked the driver repeatedly, knocking him to the ground and beating him severely. During the struggle, one of the men stabbed him in the abdomen.
The attackers then stole the victim’s money, personal belongings and vehicle before fleeing the complex.
Authorities were not called until another resident arrived moments later and discovered the driver bleeding heavily in the street. Emergency medical personnel rushed him to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition and was described as being “in dire straits … he’s literally fighting for his life.”
Two people reportedly witnessed the attack but did not initially contact authorities because they feared retaliation. Police said the witnesses approached officers after they arrived and confirmed that they had seen the assault unfold.
Investigators have not announced any arrests and have not identified a motive beyond robbery. They are also working to determine whether the passenger who had just been dropped off had any connection to the ambush or whether the driver was randomly targeted.
The victim’s identity has not been released.
Police are reviewing available surveillance footage and asking anyone with information about the attackers or the stolen vehicle to come forward.
The investigation remains ongoing.
