Arsenal vs Bayern Munich tops Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League schedule after a wild Tuesday that produced 40 goals across nine matches, including Paris Saint-Germain’s late 4-2 win over Barcelona despite injuries to key wingers.
There is more intrigue across the board today. Real Madrid’s record signing Yan Diomande meets former club RB Leipzig, while Inter seek a response after a shock loss to Club Brugge, whose in-form striker has Europe’s elite watching. The marquee matchup, however, is in Munich.
Arsenal vs Bayern Munich: Depth on trial
When these clubs met 11 months ago, Arsenal showcased the roster depth Mikel Arteta has built. Even without all three senior strikers and defensive anchor Gabriel, and after losing Leandro Trossard before halftime, the Gunners improved as the game wore on thanks to impactful substitutions. Riccardo Calafiori set up Noni Madueke, and Gabriel Martinelli later burned past Manuel Neuer, underscoring how Arteta’s bench can tilt tight contests.
That pattern has continued. Since the start of last season, Arsenal have 28 goals from substitutes across competitions, including recent winners against Leeds United and Nottingham Forest. Their depth also helped them ride out a lengthy injury spell to their first-choice frontline before clinching the Premier League title. Standards dipped later, and while Viktor Gyokeres and Eberechi Eze are not Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard, they kept Arsenal on track domestically. Even without William Saliba this year, Arsenal still look among Europe’s stingiest defenses, aided by England international Ezri Konsa as cover.
Bayern have not leaned as heavily on rotation. With fewer domestic fixtures and a less punishing calendar than England’s, Vincent Kompany has ridden a core group. Eighteen Bayern players have surpassed 100 minutes so far, and that total may not grow much by season’s end, whereas Arsenal could reach 23 or 24.
For this Allianz Arena meeting, Bayern’s options are further thinned. Michael Olise is suspended and Jamal Musiala is out injured, likely pushing Ismael Saibari and Lennart Karl into starting roles. Serge Gnabry may be the primary senior forward available off the bench. Joshua Kimmich missed Tuesday training for private reasons but is expected to feature, with 21-year-old Tom Bischof an option if needed.
Bayern’s backups, including fullbacks Josip Stanisic and Nathaniel Brown, are capable, but may not be game-changers against top opposition. Arsenal, by contrast, could turn to Bruno Guimaraes, Martin Zubimendi, Ben White, Gyokeres and Eze. The opening hour should be balanced, but the final stretch might suit Arsenal’s deeper bench.

Is Tresoldi the breakout striker of the season?
Club Brugge forward Nicolo Tresoldi is drawing major attention after his Champions League form. Courted by both Germany and Italy internationally, he has been linked with Inter, AC Milan, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool and Everton. A hat trick against Inter last week only boosted the buzz. Since joining Brugge last season, the 22-year-old has eight Champions League goals, including two penalties this term and another in qualifying against Rangers.
The numbers suggest this is sustainable. Tresoldi is slightly underperforming his 8.8 expected goals, averaging nearly one expected goal and close to four shots per 90 at this level. In Belgium’s top flight, Wyscout tracks him at 1.03 xG per 90, with positioning that hints at a natural poacher’s instinct.
Buying attackers from Club Brugge has worked for many clubs, with Lois Openda, Antonio Nusa, Igor Thiago and Christos Tzolis adapting quickly. Given Tresoldi’s impact against top sides, expect a fierce transfer race if he continues this Champions League run.

Diomande’s reunion with RB Leipzig
Real Madrid’s 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande has earned more minutes in recent weeks, flashing the form that made him a standout for RB Leipzig and Ivory Coast at the World Cup. After a goal and assist in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Sevilla, manager Jose Mourinho said the teenager is talented but still raw, noting that the expectations match Madrid’s 125 million euro outlay and urging improvement in decision-making and finishing.
Mourinho also expressed confidence in Diomande’s potential, likening his stage of development to an early Vinícius Júnior. Through 11 games he has two goals and three assists, while posting 1.59 non-penalty expected goals plus assists per 90 and leading Europe’s top five leagues for successful one-on-ones at 4.74 per 90 among players with at least 400 minutes. The caveat is a small sample and some substitute appearances, but the ceiling is evident as he faces his former club.
