Two ex-FBI officials charged with making false statements about Hunter Biden’s laptop are facing scrutiny as the Justice Department presses forward with a politically sensitive case.
According to court filings, one of the defendants is a former FBI intelligence official who specialized in foreign election interference. The specific counts against Nikki Floris were not detailed in public records as of Friday, when she was scheduled to appear in court. Her legal team dismissed the case as baseless and politically driven.
“Nikki Floris is a patriot. She served our nation as a dedicated FBI intelligence officer for nearly 20 years. Yet today, the DOJ has accused her falsely of a crime on the say-so of politicians, not on the facts. It’s no coincidence the government is filing these nonsense charges now, years later, on the eve of an election,” her attorneys said in a statement.
Ex-FBI officials charged ahead of election
The case was filed 10 days before the Nov. 3 elections, marking another high-profile and politically charged move by the Justice Department in the final stretch before the midterm contests.
Some Democrats and Republicans have previously clashed with the department over election-related actions, including disputes over mail-in ballots and voting access, as seen when the DOJ charges noncitizens in California, seeks to block ballots in a separate case.
Further details about the allegations and the status of the second former official were not immediately available.
Election law experts noted that the timing of politically sensitive prosecutions often draws scrutiny from watchdog groups such as the Campaign Legal Center, which track how law enforcement actions intersect with voting and campaign activity.
