Malachi Toney injury: Miami WR to have ankle surgery

Malachi Toney injury concerns Miami’s top-ranked team after the standout receiver hurt his ankle in practice on Wednesday. According to multiple reports, Toney suffered a high-ankle sprain and is expected to undergo surgery. There is optimism inside the program that he could return if the Hurricanes make the College Football Playoff.

Toney has been Miami’s most explosive playmaker this season, with 73 receptions for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns. His production for the nation’s No. 1 team has vaulted him into the Heisman Trophy conversation alongside quarterback Darian Mensah.

The timing is difficult for Miami with a pivotal matchup against Notre Dame this week, as the Hurricanes seek ways to generate chunk plays against a strong Irish defense.

Malachi Toney injury impact on Miami offense

Toney’s breakout came in last season’s win over Notre Dame, when the then-freshman posted six catches for 82 yards and a touchdown in a 27-24 victory to open the year. He was the primary threat Notre Dame planned to bracket with extra attention, and losing his downfield explosiveness and space-creating ability is a major setback.

So far this season, Toney accounts for 35.1% of Miami’s receptions, 38.6% of receiving yards and 46.4% of receiving touchdowns. Cooper Barkate ranks second on the team with 28 catches for 372 yards and four scores, but he does not replicate Toney’s game-breaking element.

Miami features Toney across formations to stress defenses, which allows offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson to target soft spots and limit easy adjustments. Without him, opponents can commit more resources to slowing the run.

The Hurricanes rank 21st nationally in rushing at 202.5 yards per game and 10th in yards per carry at 5.49. Running backs Mark Fletcher Jr. and Javian Mallory form one of the country’s top tandems, but they benefit from the respect defenses must give the vertical passing threat when Toney is on the field.

Against Notre Dame, the Irish would have faced the choice of stacking the box to contain the run or keeping help deep to prevent Toney from getting loose. His absence creates ripple effects beyond the passing game.

Heisman Trophy implications

Saturday’s game also shaped up as a prime stage for Heisman moments for both Toney and Mensah. Toney entered the week second in Heisman odds at +290 at FanDuel Sportsbook, trailing only Mensah at +170. After news of the injury, Toney’s number shifted to +800, and following word of surgery expectations he was removed from the board. His status could affect Mensah’s candidacy as well if Miami’s passing output dips.

With the update, Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith moved to the shortest odds at +160, Mensah adjusted to +165, and Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr climbed to +550 as the Irish became a 7.5-point favorite over Miami.

Further updates on Toney’s timeline are expected as the week progresses. Fans can monitor official injury reports and updates from the Miami Hurricanes, along with evolving Heisman odds at FanDuel Sportsbook.
