Oregon school shooting 911 call captures dad’s response

The newly released Oregon school shooting 911 call captures the frantic moments before a Bend father rushed into Silver Rail Elementary and fatally shot the 16-year-old gunman, authorities said Tuesday.

According to the 80-second recording, 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco phoned 911 as the Oct. 15 attack began. “Someone’s at the school, at my daughters’ school with a gun. I have a gun, and I will shoot them right now if I have to,” he told the dispatcher.

Giamanco’s two daughters were inside the Bend, Oregon campus when he happened to drive by and saw the shooter throw a weapon over the school’s fence and climb after it. He later entered the building with his handgun and killed the attacker. Officials said the gunman had already killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher.

The audio begins with Giamanco exclaiming, “Oh my God,” before identifying the location to the dispatcher: “Silver Rail Elementary! Silver Rail Elementary!” He provided his phone number and said he did not know the shooter’s identity. “This is my daughters’ school. I’m about to go kill this kid,” he said.

As the dispatcher pressed for the suspect’s location inside the school, Giamanco relayed what he could see and hear. “God d— it, they’re f—ing shooting people. Come on!” he said at one point. The call ends shortly after the dispatcher asked for a description of the shooter and told him, “We have help en route.”

Officials have said the shooting started when the gunman fired at a vehicle before moving onto the elementary school campus. Giamanco previously recounted that he grabbed his firearm in a panic after witnessing the shooter scale the fence with the weapon.

The two girls survived the attack. The recording underscores the chaos during the first moments of the incident as law enforcement raced to the scene and a parent took action to stop the threat.
