Texas high school football politics reflect a shifting electorate

Texas high school football politics were on display at Deer Park High School’s homecoming, where fans at the tailgate, concession stand and in the bleachers shared what is shaping their votes in a season of unusually close statewide contests.

Texas high school football politics in the stands

Texas and football are a familiar pairing, and on Friday nights the field can feel like common ground for communities across the state. Fans described the stadium as a place where families gather to support the band, cheer squad and team, whether in big cities or rural towns.

Emily Taylor, a Democrat living in conservative Deer Park outside Houston, said this election feels different. She recently noticed campaign signs for Democrats James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa in places where she had not seen them in past cycles, which gave her hope.

Recent polling indicates those Democrats have pushed Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton into highly competitive races, with both contests effectively tied.

Others see a different outcome. Regular attendee Eric Schutlz said he plans to vote Republican, focusing on policies affecting children and older adults.

He expects Texas to remain in GOP hands, suggesting that while big cities are divided, smaller communities tend to be more like-minded and likely to keep the status quo.

Economy, immigration and voter motivation

Some voters voiced frustration with national leadership and the pace of change. Nate Esser said he hopes people recognize that the current administration is not helping them, citing inflation, gas prices and fairness for all, including equal rights for LGBTQ people and people of color.

He criticized federal immigration enforcement, which has drawn scrutiny across Texas after incidents involving ICE and allegations of excessive force. Esser was surprised to hear that views in the stands appeared split.

At the concession booth, manager Stephanie Peterson said rising prices weigh on her, both when stocking snacks and at home. She said higher costs are squeezing families that rely on a single income.

Peterson voted for Donald Trump in 2024 but is undecided about showing up to vote this time.

From inflation to immigration, voters at the game expressed sharply different priorities and expectations for Election Day.

Yet as the horn sounded and Deer Park scored, those differences faded into a single cheer for the home team under the Friday night lights.
