A Williston Lake floating island has captivated residents in northern British Columbia after it seemed to appear out of nowhere, vanish, then reemerge miles away on the vast hydroelectric reservoir.
According to a spokesperson for the British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority, the thickly forested mass, estimated at roughly 500 feet long, was first reported last month after boaters captured video and photos and shared them on social media. Not long after, observers could not locate it again, only for it to be seen later about 20 miles from the initial sighting.
How the Williston Lake floating island likely formed
BC Hydro’s preliminary theory is that the island developed over many years as floating woody debris accumulated in a sheltered bay along the reservoir’s shoreline. Logs and branches compressed together, creating a raft-like base.
Over time, seeds took hold, moss spread, and eventually trees grew, their roots knitting the debris into a more cohesive mat. When seasonal snowmelt raised reservoir levels, the buoyant mass may have lifted free from the shore.
Wind then likely pushed the island into open water, where it began drifting, which would explain sightings far from the original location. Similar debris rafts have been documented following major floods in other large water bodies, including in events such as a Grand Canyon flash flood.
Public urged to keep distance from unstable surface
While officials say boaters can approach to observe or film, they are warning people not to step onto the island because of unknown stability. The surface could give way, creating a fall risk for anyone attempting to climb aboard.
Authorities are asking the public to be cautious and prioritize safety while the unusual feature continues to draw interest. BC Hydro said it had not encountered a similar phenomenon on Williston Lake before and noted that long-time local users of the reservoir also reported no prior sightings.
The utility has posted updates and safety information on its official channels, including the BC Hydro website, and provincial agencies are monitoring conditions through the Government of British Columbia.
