AI data center training is ramping up in Houston as a new program prepares blue-collar workers for construction jobs tied to the infrastructure fueling the artificial intelligence boom, according to officials involved with the effort.
The Houston facility will host a program under America’s Workforce Academy, a Meta-backed initiative focused on growing the skilled-trades pipeline for data centers and related infrastructure projects.
Meta has committed an initial $115 million to the academy and is collaborating with Associated Builders and Contractors, CBRE, the National Urban League and local partners to deliver workforce training nationwide.
In Houston, Meta and Associated Builders and Contractors are launching a general construction course scheduled to begin Nov. 2.
AI data center training expands through new academy
Separately, the academy rolled out a fiber technician program with CBRE in July in Indianapolis and Columbus. The first cohort graduated in August, and new classes are starting weekly.
At the Houston training site, Joel Thames, ABC vice president of health, safety, environment and workforce development, called America’s Workforce Academy a major investment in trades training and said it aims to give everyday Americans a direct role in the data-center construction surge.
Thames said the program is designed to prioritize workers, emphasizing safety, proper construction practices and portable credentials. He acknowledged debate around data centers and encouraged communities to understand local projects, while underscoring the academy’s focus on safe, high-quality builds.
Announced earlier this year, the initiative has drawn praise from blue-collar advocates for rethinking training pathways for the next generation of skilled workers.
Graduates of the Houston program’s four-week intensive course will earn an industry-recognized credential from the National Center for Construction Education and Research along with an America’s Workforce Certificate, according to Meta.
Thames said demand is intense as construction accelerates around data centers and other projects, citing an estimated shortfall of about 349,000 U.S. workers needed to meet current construction needs.
Meta has framed the initiative around that gap, noting the U.S. labor market requires large numbers of fiber technicians, welders, plumbers, electricians and other skilled trades to power future growth.
Inside the Houston program and facilities
Thames said Meta approached ABC to provide job opportunities and funding, while ABC handles instruction and credentialing.
The Houston-area program will operate from an approximately 20,000-square-foot site near the Houston Ship Channel, outfitted with classrooms, a computer lab and two bays for hands-on practical training.
The facility is run by the Construction & Maintenance Education Foundation, a nonprofit affiliate of ABC Greater Houston, which will host the academy’s Houston-area training.
Houston is among several academy locations. Programs are underway in Ohio and Indiana, and another is slated to start in Louisiana in November. A Meta spokesperson said 277 students have already graduated in Ohio and Indiana, with more finishing each week.
Interest has been strong. Thames said thousands applied soon after the announcement. The academy expects to graduate about 300 people per month across its programs, with plans to expand.
Focus on construction skills, safety and mobility
Thames emphasized the Houston curriculum centers on construction skills and worker safety, not on teaching artificial intelligence. He noted the credentials will remain valuable even if demand for data centers cools.
The rise of AI data centers has heightened demand for electricians, plumbers, heavy-equipment operators and other trades needed to build and maintain the supporting infrastructure.
Thames said the priority is ensuring jobs are done correctly and safely, and that workers develop skills for long-term careers in construction. He added that if data centers are built, the goal is for those jobs to benefit American workers.
