HSBC strategist warns retail investors about AI rally risks

The AI rally has captivated markets this year, but HSBC’s top multiasset strategist is urging caution. Maxx Kettner said retail investors should recognize that the goal posts are constantly moving with AI investing, making it harder to gauge value and timing.

AI rally

Kettner noted that enthusiasm for artificial intelligence has driven sharp gains in select stocks, yet the landscape is evolving quickly. What looks like a winning thesis today can shift as new models, hardware, and business use cases emerge.

For individual investors, that means strategies based on yesterday’s assumptions may not hold up tomorrow. According to Kettner, the rapid pace of change can widen the gap between expectations and fundamentals.

He suggested investors remain disciplined on valuation, consider diversification across sectors tied to AI infrastructure and applications, and be mindful of concentration risk.

For Hawaiʻi investors watching Wall Street’s tech-led surge, the takeaway is to avoid chasing momentum without a clear risk plan. The AI trade may continue to create opportunities, but Kettner emphasized that staying flexible and reassessing positions as the technology evolves is essential.
