Players to watch
Justin Herbert, Chargers quarterback: Los Angeles’ AFC quarterback has thrown an interception in five straight games and has been sacked 21 times. He faces a Rams defense giving up 186 passing yards per game, fourth fewest. Herbert’s mobility has been a bright spot, with 168 rushing yards at 5.8 per carry. His matchup with edge rusher Byron Young, who leads the Rams with 4.5 sacks, will be critical to keep the pocket clean.
Khalil Mack, Chargers edge rusher: Mack leads the Chargers with three sacks but has been held without one in two consecutive games. He draws a Rams offensive line that has allowed 11 sacks, a top-10 protection mark, in front of the league’s No. 2 passer by yardage. With the Rams among the most pass-heavy teams, Mack’s ability to turn dropbacks into hits is pivotal. He also has five tackles for loss, making early-down snaps against Kyren Williams just as important.
Matthew Stafford, Rams quarterback: Stafford has 1,989 passing yards, second most in the NFL behind Jordan Love, who has played one more game, and his 14 touchdown passes are tied for fifth. The Chargers allow 206 passing yards per game, a top-10 figure, which could force the Rams to stay balanced. Stafford has seven interceptions, so patience will matter against a defense with five picks. Play-action built off Williams’ runs could test the Chargers where they are strongest and weakest.
Kyren Williams, Rams running back: Williams rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown in Week 7, narrowly missing his first 100-yard game of the season. He now faces a Chargers defense allowing 124 rushing yards per game. With Los Angeles’ AFC team stouter versus the pass, the Rams can lean on the ground game. Rookie Blake Corum added 93 yards against the Raiders, giving the Rams depth to sustain the run. Williams also has 32 receptions on 41 targets, adding a pass-game outlet, and the second-half carry split with Corum bears watching.
