Macro strategist warns bull market outlook is fading soon

The bull market outlook may be running short on time, according to macro strategist Alex Barrow, founder of Macro Ops, who says the rally likely has six to 12 months left before conditions turn and unprepared investors face a painful reset.

Bull market outlook on borrowed time

Barrow argues the current advance is late cycle and vulnerable to a reversal within the next year. He cautions that investors who have not adjusted their positioning could see significant downside if momentum stalls and leadership narrows further.

What could drive the turn

  • Late-cycle signals, including stretched valuations and thinning market breadth.
  • Shifts in liquidity and tighter financial conditions as policy support wanes.
  • Rising macro uncertainty that could undermine risk appetite.

His playbook for the months ahead

  • Be selective with equity exposure, focusing on quality balance sheets and durable cash flows.
  • Trim overextended winners and avoid crowded momentum trades.
  • Maintain dry powder to take advantage of volatility and potential dislocations.
  • Balance risk with diversifiers, including opportunistic hedges where appropriate.

Barrow, a former Marine sniper who now tracks global macro trends, says patience and discipline will be critical if the cycle turns as he expects. For Hawai‘i investors, that could mean reassessing risk across retirement accounts and local portfolios, and preparing for bumpier markets over the next year.
