Miniature therapy horses are helping patients find moments of calm and connection, thanks to a program inspired by a tiny but charismatic mare named Black Pearl.
After years competing in dressage, a Southern California rider adopted Black Pearl as a six-month-old from a ranch in Solvang in 2008. The playful filly, who zipped around the paddock before returning for cuddles, quickly became more than a companion. Training her for fun soon led to teaching tricks, then to a bigger idea: visiting people who could benefit from the little horse’s gentle presence.
That spark became Mini Therapy Horses, a nonprofit built around Black Pearl’s outgoing personality. The group now includes Black Pearl and eight other miniature therapy horses that make regular visits to the locked psychiatric unit at a veterans hospital in Los Angeles. According to the program, many of the veterans are dealing with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries or substance use, and some are experiencing homelessness. Time with the minis, where patients can pet and hug the horses, helps ease feelings of isolation.
The team also brings the miniature therapy horses to other hospitals, where long-term patients, both children and adults, look forward to the visits. For kids with visual impairments, handlers guide their hands to feel the horses’ manes and coats. Grooming provides a soothing, tactile experience that often brings smiles.
Black Pearl will walk beside a patient in a wheelchair while they gently hold the reins, offering a moment that recalls life with a beloved pet. For those missing animals at home, a quiet cuddle with the mare can be a true lift.
Among the herd, Black Pearl is the unabashed show-stealer. She thrives on positive energy and delights crowds with her repertoire. She is the group’s best “keyboard player,” tapping and rubbing her muzzle across the keys. She can rear and walk on her hind legs, high-five with a hoof, smile, nod yes, shake her head no, and prance with animated front-leg struts.
Working alongside Black Pearl has opened doors to people from all walks of life and reinforced a mission of service. The little mare’s big personality turned a casual training project into a calling to help others, and her influence continues to be a blessing to everyone she meets.
How miniature therapy horses make a difference
Handlers say miniature therapy horses offer calm, touch, and joyful distraction in clinical settings. From VA psychiatric units to pediatric wards, the visits provide connection, routine, and comfort to patients and staff alike.
According to recent coverage of teen mental health, consistent support and connection are key to emotional well-being. Programs like these equine visits are one more way caregivers and clinicians are trying to meet those needs in creative, compassionate ways.
Across hospitals and care facilities, animal-assisted therapy is increasingly recognized by groups such as the American Psychological Association for its potential benefits. As miniature therapy horses like Black Pearl continue their rounds, they leave behind not just smiles but lasting memories of comfort and care.
