Scotland weather warnings as third storm nears the isles

Scotland weather warnings were strengthened on Monday as agencies prepared for a third storm to sweep across the country, bringing strong winds, large waves and a heightened risk of coastal and surface flooding.

According to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, an amber flood risk is now in effect for the northern and Western Isles, as well as Caithness and Sutherland. Officials also cautioned that parts of the southwest and Argyll, including the Solway Firth and Firth of Clyde, can expect volatile marine conditions.

Sepa said flooding of low-lying land is likely in the affected areas, and urged residents to remain alert to rapidly changing conditions along exposed coasts and tidal inlets.

Highland Council reported that flood gates on the Caol and Lochyside flood protection scheme near Fort William have been closed following the agency’s warning. The mile-long barrier is designed to reduce flood risk to nearby communities.

Police Scotland advised that a high risk of disruption remains, with further poor weather expected on Tuesday. Assistant Chief Constable Mark Sutherland said that, although an amber weather warning is no longer in place, disruption is likely to continue due to ongoing severe conditions, fallen trees and other storm damage.

Social Justice and Housing Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville told BBC Scotland News there are challenges ahead because of the prolonged nature of the weather. She urged councils to review their readiness and said authorities are working to ensure everything possible is being done to protect communities.

Somerville added that residents can help by making households as resilient as possible and by looking out for neighbors and friends during the unsettled spell.

Scotland weather warnings extend to coastal and island communities

With persistent wind and wave action expected across the northern isles and the west coast, officials warned that travel, ferry services and coastal roads may be affected. Communities across the islands and along exposed shorelines were encouraged to monitor local updates and follow safety advice.

Authorities also highlighted potential disruption to power and transport, echoing issues seen when Storm Boelo brings 80mph gusts, power cuts and event cancellations across parts of the UK. Residents were urged to heed any local evacuation advice in low-lying coastal areas.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency continued to update its official flood warnings as conditions developed through Monday night and into Tuesday.
