The White House media ban announced Friday by President Trump blocks CNN, MS NOW and Politico from access, with the president citing what he called unfavorable and false reporting and warning that additional outlets could face the same action.
Trump has frequently criticized news coverage he says portrays him negatively, and he has a record of suing media organizations while publicly rebuking individual reporters both in person and on social media.
Recent history of access limits
The move follows Trump’s February 2025 decision to bar Associated Press journalists from the Oval Office, Air Force One and other small press events. That step came after the AP declined to follow his lead on changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico.
The AP sued over the restrictions, and the case remains active. Since returning to office, Trump has also pursued legal action against several outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the BBC.

Targeting CNN could be especially significant because it may disrupt the traditional five-network television pool that travels with the president and documents his movements. That pool arrangement is designed to ensure independent coverage of the presidency for the public and international audiences.
How the ban would work remains unclear
Trump provided no details on how the White House media ban would be carried out. The announcement appeared on his social media account shortly before he spoke to reporters in the Oval Office during a health care event.
He was later scheduled to bring the press pool to his Virginia golf club for a meeting and dinner tied to his Super PAC before spending the weekend at Camp David, one of the few places reporters typically do not accompany him. A recent Supreme Court case on election procedures, including a decision that rejected a Trump mail voting plan, has also heightened tensions between the administration and institutions that check presidential power.
On social media, Trump wrote that effective immediately, “I am banning” CNN, MS NOW and Politico “from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” He added, “Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America. Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”
